Passport Photo Size by Country: mm, Inches and Pixels

There is no single passport photo size. Most countries print a photo of 35 × 45 mm, the United States uses 2 × 2 inches, and many online applications care about pixels and file size more than about millimetres. This guide puts the sizes side by side, taken from the same official rules as the country pages on SafeResize.

The short answer

• 35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm) is the size most passport and visa photos use. More than half of the documents in the table below ask for it, including the Schengen visa, the UK passport, the Australian passport and the Irish passport.
• 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) is the United States size for passport and Green Card photos, and a few other countries use it too.
• Other sizes exist: 50 × 70 mm for Canadian passports, 40 × 60 mm for some e-visas, 30 × 40 mm for Colombia, Kuwait and Qatar, and 33 × 48 mm for China.

The size on paper is not the size in pixels. A 35 × 45 mm photo is 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI. The guide on how many pixels a passport photo is shows how to work this out for any size.

Every document with a print size

The tables in this guide cover 48 of the 49 countries and regions on SafeResize. A country is left out when its document takes only a studio or office photo and has no size to show.

Each row links to the page where you can make that photo. The mm, cm and inch columns are the size of the printed photo. Where the official rule is written in inches, the metric sizes are converted and rounded.

"Pixels" is the size SafeResize makes for that document. It meets the official pixel rule where there is one, and the country page shows the exact rule. "Studio or office photo" means the document does not accept a photo you make yourself.

Photos with a pixel rule instead of a print size

Many online applications do not give a size in millimetres at all. They set the pixels and the file size, and the website crops or resizes the photo itself. These are the self-made photos in that group.

Which numbers matter for you

• Uploading to a website: the pixels and the file size matter. The millimetres are only a guide to the shape of the photo.
• Printing a photo: the millimetres matter, and so does the print quality (DPI). Print at actual size (100%), never "fit to page", and measure one print with a ruler before you use it.
• File size: the limit is in KB or MB. If a website says the file is too big when Windows shows a smaller number, read KB, MB and why the same file shows two sizes.

How to get the right size

1. Find your document in the table and open its page. If your country is not listed, use Resize a photo with the size the website gives.
