The photo is 33 × 48 mm. The official rules do not fix a pixel size. SafeResize makes a sharp 390 × 567 pixel file that fits every other rule.
33 × 48 mm is 3.3 × 4.8 cm or 1.3 × 1.89 inches, in a 11:16 shape. Printed at 300 DPI it is 390 × 567 pixels, and at 600 DPI 780 × 1134 pixels. These are conversions of the official size, not extra rules.
Between 30 KB and 80 KB. SafeResize checks the size before you download, and keeps it inside the limit whether the website counts 1 KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.
White. Stand in front of a plain wall with no pattern, and face a window so there are no shadows behind you. The official rules do not allow edited photos, so SafeResize does not change the background for this document: a plain wall is the way.
From the chin to the top of the head, your head should fill 59% to 68% of the photo height. The face guide in the tool shows both lines.
The official rules say: Glasses are allowed if the lenses are not tinted and flash, shadows or frames do not blur the outline of the eyes; hearing aids are fine.
Digital photo taken within 6 months showing the whole face and head, with no shadows on the face or background; natural expression, eyes open, lips closed. Head 15–22 mm wide and 28–33 mm from chin to crown, 3–5 mm below the top edge, with at least 7 mm below the chin. Glasses are allowed if the lenses are not tinted and flash, shadows or frames do not blur the outline of the eyes; hearing aids are fine. Several missions ask for dark clothes, not white or light-coloured ones. Head coverings only for religious, medical or cultural reasons, without hiding the face. No edited or composite photos. Uploaded in the China Consular (中国领事) mobile application; a consular officer decides whether the photo is accepted.
JPEG. SafeResize saves a JPG (JPEG) file.
Yes. A photo you take yourself can be used if it meets every rule above: the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles says the photo does not have to come from a studio. Other missions advise a studio photo: the consulates in Osaka and Auckland recommend one taken by a professional studio, and Auckland advises against the selfie camera of the China Consular application, which can mirror the face and distort its proportions. The embassy in Switzerland reports that many phone selfies are sent back, mostly for a background that is not white, uneven light, or a head that is too big, too small or tilted. It is easier if someone else takes it for you.
No. The photo is processed inside your browser and never leaves your phone or computer.
Please note: The Foreign Ministry's photo sheet says a JPEG of 30–80 KB, while embassy FAQs for the China Consular application say JPG or PNG under 5 MB; a JPEG of 30–80 KB meets both.
