AI mode uses a neural network for cleaner detail and is offered only on devices whose graphics chip can run it. You compare the before and after with a slider, then save a JPG or PNG. No. Nothing can recover detail the camera did not record. Fast mode enlarges cleanly and adds no new detail. AI mode sharpens edges and cleans blocky JPEG marks, and it can change fine parts a little, so faces and text may look different from the original. Check them before you use the result. Fast is a careful, sharp enlargement. It takes about 2.5 seconds for a 768 × 512 photo on a laptop and longer on a phone, it works on modern phones and computers, and it does not change what is in the picture. AI takes longer and gives cleaner detail on small photos. At 2× and 3× the AI result is blended with a plain enlargement. On dark, noisy photos AI can score lower than Fast when compared with the original, because it smooths the noise: the result looks smoother, not necessarily worse. The first time you use AI, the page downloads a 2.3 MB model file from saferesize.com, once, and your browser normally keeps it for next time. AI is only offered where the graphics chip can run it, and it can use a lot of battery on a phone. If a job would take more than about 3 minutes, the tool says so and offers Fast instead.
The biggest picture has 16,777,216 pixels, which is 4096 × 4096 for a square photo. The limit is the same on every device and was chosen to suit phones. No side is longer than 8,192 pixels. When 4× would be too big, the tool picks the biggest step that fits and tells you. A photo that already has 16.8 megapixels or more is left as it is.
JPG makes a smaller file. You can set its quality, or ask for it to stay under a size in KB or MB. PNG keeps the best quality and keeps see-through parts of a picture, which JPG turns white. The file is named like photo-4x.jpg.
No. Both modes work on your own device. For AI mode the page downloads the model, a file that is the same for everyone and comes from saferesize.com itself. Your photo is not part of that request.
