How to make your PRC ID photo

  1. Stand about an arm's length from the camera in front of a plain wall (plain white). Face a window for soft, even light.
  2. Add the photo on this page. It stays on your device.
  3. Drag and zoom until your face fills the green oval: top of the head on the top line, chin on the bottom line.
  4. Download the photo. The pixels, file size and format are checked before you save it.
  5. Upload it to the official application.

Questions and answers

What size is the PRC ID photo?

The photo is 2 × 2 inches. The official rules do not fix a pixel size. SafeResize makes a sharp 600 × 600 pixel file that fits every other rule.

How big is a 2x2 picture for the PRC ID in cm and pixels?

2 × 2 inches is 50.8 × 50.8 mm or 5.08 × 5.08 cm, a square. Printed at 300 DPI it is 600 × 600 pixels, and at 600 DPI 1200 × 1200 pixels. These are conversions of the official size, not extra rules.

What file size does the PRC ID photo need to be?

The official rules do not state a file size. SafeResize shows the size of your file before you download it, so you can compare it with what the application screen asks for.

What background colour does the PRC ID photo need?

Plain white. Stand in front of a plain wall with no pattern, and face a window so there are no shadows behind you. The official rules do not allow AI-generated photos, so SafeResize does not change the background for this document: a plain wall is the way.

How big should my head be in the PRC ID photo?

From the chin to the top of the head, your head should fill 50% to 69% of the photo height. The official rules do not state this, so we use the range the US sets for its square 2 × 2 inch photos. The face guide in the tool shows both lines.

Can I wear glasses in my PRC ID photo?

The official rules say: The application is not processed if the photo does not resemble you, you wear eyeglasses, the background is not plain white, the photo has shadows, or the photo is AI-generated.

What else do the PRC ID photo rules say?

Colour photo with a plain white background, taken within the last 6 months, in decent attire with a collar (corporate attire); sleeveless tops are not allowed. Full-face view, facing the camera directly. A woman who wears a hijab for religious reasons may keep it on if her whole face, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, shows without shadows from the fabric. The application is not processed if the photo does not resemble you, you wear eyeglasses, the background is not plain white, the photo has shadows, or the photo is AI-generated. Have the JPG on your computer, phone or tablet before you start; a photo studio can give you an e-file.

Which file format should I use?

JPG. SafeResize saves a JPG (JPEG) file.

Can I take this photo at home?

Yes. A photo taken at home is fine if it follows the rules above. It is easier if someone else takes it for you.

Is my photo uploaded to SafeResize?

No. The photo is processed inside your browser and never leaves your phone or computer.

Please note: LERIS warns that uploading an AI-generated photo is strictly prohibited and a ground for disapproval, so SafeResize does not use its AI to replace the background for this photo: take it in front of a real plain white wall.
