What this tool does

Remove the background from any photo: a person, a product, a pet, a car or a logo. An AI model finds what to keep, and everything else becomes see-through. You get a PNG at the size of your photo, ready for a shop listing, a profile picture, a slide or a design. The AI runs on your own device: the first time, the page downloads it once from saferesize.com, and your photo is never uploaded.

How it works

  1. Choose a photo, or take one with your phone.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the background is found and removed. The first time, the AI is downloaded once.
  3. Compare the original and the cut-out with the slider, then download the PNG.

Questions and answers

Is it really free? Is there a watermark or a size limit?

It is free, with no watermark and no sign-up. You get the full size of your photo, up to 12 megapixels (for example 4000 × 3000 pixels). A bigger photo is made smaller to that size, so phones can cope.

How long does it take?

About 10 to 20 seconds for a photo on a recent computer, and longer on a phone, up to a minute or more on an older one. The first time also includes the one-time download of the AI. The screen shows how long is left.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The background is removed on your own device. The page downloads the AI model from saferesize.com the first time, and that file is the same for everyone. Your photo is not part of that request.

Which photos work best?

Photos where the person or thing stands out from the background: a clear subject, in focus, and not cut off by the edge of the photo. Hair, fur, glass, smoke and see-through things are the hardest, so check their edges. White or Black behind the picture helps you see them.

Why is the first time slower?

The first time, the page downloads the AI model once and keeps it on your device. After that it starts straight away, even for the next photo.

Why is the file a PNG?

PNG keeps the see-through background. JPG cannot, and would turn it white or black. The file is named like photo-no-background.png.

Which phones and browsers does it work on?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones and computers. Devices with more processor cores finish sooner. On a phone with little memory it may stop with a message: then close other apps and try again, or use a computer.
