Compress a photo to 40 KB

Get a photo under 40 KB for an application form while keeping the face clear. Add a minimum too if the form has one. Free, private, nothing uploaded.

Before you start

Some application forms cap the photo at 40 KB. That leaves room for a clear head-and-shoulders photo, but not for a full phone photo, which is usually 2 to 5 MB.

The tool below opens with 40 KB typed in the size box. Add your photo, press "Make it smaller", and check the result page. It shows the size, the pixels and the JPG quality before you download.

Tips

40 KB spread over the pixels

A JPG shares its bytes between its pixels, so the more pixels a photo has, the less room each one gets. That is why SafeResize makes a big photo smaller in pixels when the limit is tight: a small, clean photo looks better than a big, blocky one. At 40 KB (40,000 bytes), each pixel gets about:

Questions and answers

The form says 40 KB to 120 KB. What do I do?

That is a range, like the one for the China Visa photo (40 KB to 120 KB). Change the number in the size box to 120, then open "More options" and type 40 in "Must be at least". Or use the China visa page, which also sets the pixels.

Why does my phone say 40 KB and Windows 39 KB?

Phones count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and Windows counts 1,024. A file of 40,000 bytes is 40 KB on a phone and 39.1 KB on Windows. SafeResize keeps the file under 40,000 bytes, so both are fine.

Does the photo keep its shape?

Yes. The whole picture is kept. If it has to get smaller in pixels, the width and the height go down together, so nothing is stretched or cut off.
