Before you start

A signature with a see-through background can sit on a document, a letterhead or a PDF without a white box around it. This page opens Clean up a signature with the see-through background chosen. Add a photo of your signature on paper: the tool evens out the light, makes the paper and its shadows see-through, keeps only the ink, and trims the empty space around it.

You get a PNG, because a JPG cannot be see-through. Your ink becomes one even colour, black or blue, whichever you choose. The PNG is as wide as your signature is in the photo, up to 1,200 pixels. If a form asks for a white JPG in a KB range instead, use one of the signature size pages below.

Tips

What we got from the sample signature

The sample on this page is a phone-style photo of a signature on paper, 1600 × 1200 pixels, with uneven light and a dark corner. Saved see-through, the signature came out at 917 × 364 pixels, with the empty paper around it trimmed away. About 95% of its pixels are fully see-through. The PNG was about 49 KB with black ink and 53 KB with blue ink, as the result page shows them.

A see-through signature is a picture of your ink, not a secure digital signature. Keep the file to yourself: anyone who has it could put it on a document.

Questions and answers

How do I remove the background from a signature?

Take a photo of your signature on white paper and add it on this page. The paper and the shadows are removed for you. Check the lines, keep "See-through" chosen, and press "Save my signature". You get a PNG with only your ink on it.

Why is it a PNG and not a JPG?

A JPG cannot be see-through: it would fill the background with white. PNG keeps it see-through. If a form wants a JPG on a white background, choose "White" instead, or use a signature size page.

Will a see-through signature be accepted on an official form?

It depends on the form. A see-through PNG is for placing on documents and PDFs. Many online application forms ask for a JPG on a white background in a KB range, such as 10 KB to 20 KB: use the signature size pages for those. A signature added to a PDF is a simple electronic signature, which is not accepted everywhere.

Why not use the photo background remover?

That one is made for people, pets and products, and it downloads a large AI model the first time. This tool is made for ink on paper: it keeps the thin lines of a signature, removes what is lighter than the ink, and needs no download.
