You can remove the background from a photo for free without sending the photo to anyone. SafeResize does it with an AI model that runs in your own browser, so the photo never leaves your phone or computer. You get a PNG with a see-through background at the full size of your photo, with no watermark and no sign-up. This guide goes through the steps, the photos that work best, how to check the edges, and what to know about the file.
Your photo is never uploaded. The first time, the page downloads the AI once (about 85 MB) from saferesize.com, and your browser keeps it for next time.
Step by step
- Open Remove background.
- Choose a photo, or take one with your phone. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC photos work, although some browsers cannot open HEIC. No photo to hand? Press "No photo handy? Try a sample".
- The first time, the page says "One-time download" and shows the size of the AI. Press "Remove the background". On mobile data, Wi-Fi is better for this one download.
- Wait while the background is found and removed. A bar shows how far it has got and about how long is left. It takes about 10 to 20 seconds a photo on a recent computer, and longer on a phone, up to a minute or more on an older one. You can press Cancel at any time.
- Check the result. Drag the line across the picture to compare the original with the cut-out, and use White, Black and "Full size" (see below).
- Press "Download PNG". The button shows the file size, and the file is named like
photo-no-background.png. On a phone you may also see "Share or save to phone". - For the next photo, press "Try another photo". The AI is already on your device, so it starts straight away.
Which photos work best
The AI has to decide what to keep. It does that best when the person or thing clearly stands out from the background.
Usually easy:
- one clear subject: a person, a product, a pet, a car or a logo
- a sharp photo, in focus
- a subject that is not cut off by the edge of the photo
- a background that is plainer than the subject, or a different colour from it
Check carefully:
- hair and fur, most of all loose strands against a busy background
- glass, smoke and other see-through things
- a subject that is almost the same colour as the background
- big group photos, where people at the edges can be missed
If the tool says "We could not find a clear subject", almost everything was taken away. Try a photo where the person or thing stands out more.

How to check the edges
When the background is removed, you see the original on the left of a line and the cut-out on the right. Drag the line to compare them. Above the picture are two rows of buttons.
See-through, White and Black change what is behind the cut-out while you look at it. See-through shows a grey and white checkerboard, which is how most apps show a see-through part. White and Black are only for checking the edges: your PNG stays see-through whichever one you pick.
- On White, dark leftovers of the old background stand out.
- On Black, light leftovers stand out, such as a pale rim around hair.
Fit on screen and Full size change how big the picture is shown. Fit on screen shows the whole picture. Full size shows the real pixels, so you see the edges as they are in the file. The picture then scrolls: move it with your finger or the scroll bars, and drag the line itself to compare.
Where to look:
- along the hair or fur
- the gaps between arms and a body, or between the legs of a chair or a pet
- glasses, bottles and anything see-through
- the small spaces inside the letters of a logo
- the shadow under a product, to see whether it was kept or removed
- in a group photo, the people at the edges
If an edge is not right, a photo with a plainer background usually helps. There is no brush to fix an edge by hand, so for small touch-ups, open the PNG in a photo editor.
File size and format
Why PNG. The result is a PNG, because PNG keeps the see-through part. JPG cannot: it would fill it with white or black. Keep the file as a PNG when you save or send it again. Some chat apps change pictures when they send them, so send the PNG as a file or a document when the see-through part matters.
Pixels. The PNG has the same width and height as your photo, up to 12 megapixels (12,000,000 pixels). A bigger photo is made smaller to that size, so phones can cope. For example, a 12-megapixel phone photo is often 4032 × 3024 pixels, which is 12,192,768 pixels. That is just over the limit, so the PNG is about 4000 × 3000. The result screen shows the new size, and the size of your original when it was made smaller.
KB. A JPG photo is squeezed in a way that throws away detail you hardly see. A PNG keeps every pixel exactly and also stores how see-through each pixel is. So the PNG is often bigger in KB than the JPG you started with. The Download button shows the size before you save.
What it does not do
- It only makes a PNG with a see-through background. It does not add a white or coloured background.
- There is no touch-up brush.
- There is no batch. Photos are done one at a time.
For an official passport or visa photo, use the passport photo maker instead. It applies each country's rules for the size, the pixels and the file size.
Speed and your device
The work is done by your own device, so the time depends on it. It takes about 10 to 20 seconds a photo on a recent computer, and longer on a phone, up to a minute or more on an older one. Devices with more processor cores finish sooner. The first photo also waits for the one-time download of the AI.
On a phone with little memory, the tool may stop with a message. Close other apps and try again, or use a computer.
If you used remove.bg
The remove.bg standalone website says it will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00 CET, and that its background removal is moving to Canva. The AI runs on your own device, and your photo is never uploaded. The first time, the page downloads the AI model from saferesize.com.
