Before you start

8 × 10 inches (20.3 × 25.4 cm) is a classic size for framed prints and portraits. It has the shape 4 by 5, the same as a 16 × 20 inch print.

At 300 DPI, an 8 × 10 inch photo is 2400 × 3000 pixels, or 7.2 megapixels. The tool below opens with that size, saves the DPI in the file, and lets you choose how the photo fits, with no stretching.

Tips

Does your photo have enough pixels for 8 × 10?

An 8 × 10 print at 300 DPI needs 2400 × 3000 pixels. SafeResize reads a photo at up to 3200 pixels on its long side, so the answer depends on the shape of your photo:

Questions and answers

How many pixels do I need for an 8x10 print?

2400 × 3000 pixels at 300 DPI, which looks sharp even up close. At 200 DPI it is 1600 × 2000, which is often enough for a print on a wall.

Is 8x10 the same as A4?

No. A4 is 8.27 × 11.69 inches (210 × 297 mm): longer, and a different shape. An 8 × 10 print on A4 paper leaves a margin, and a photo made for A4 does not fit an 8 × 10 frame without trimming.

Does 300 DPI make the photo sharper?

No. DPI is only a label that tells the printer how big to print. The sharpness comes from the pixels. A photo with fewer than 2400 × 3000 pixels is enlarged to that size and can look soft. Upscale an image enlarges it more cleanly.
