Scan an ID card, front and back, to one PDF page

Before you start

Many forms ask for a copy of an ID card with the front and the back on one page. This page opens the scanner set up for that: add the front first, then the back, and the two scans are put together on one page. The page is A4 to start with, and you can choose US Letter on the last step.

A card is small, so fill the camera view with it and keep it flat on a dark surface with all four corners in view. Each side is straightened and cleaned up as its own scan, and you check both before the PDF is made.

Tips

Add the front first and the back second. The order in the list is the order on the page: the first scan on top, the second below it.

Shiny cards catch the light. If a bright patch hides the text, tilt the phone a little or move away from the lamp until the patch is gone, and do not use the torch.

Need a black and white copy? Choose the "Black and white" look. It also makes the file smaller, which helps with upload limits.

Questions and answers

Can I put front and back on separate pages?

Yes. On the last step, untick "Put two scans on one page". Each scan then gets a page of its own.

What if I add more than two scans?

They are put two to a page, in the order of the list. Three scans make two pages, with the last scan on a page by itself.

Is my ID card uploaded?

No. The pages are found, straightened and saved on your own device, and the camera view is not recorded or sent anywhere. Share the finished PDF only with the people who need it.
