# SafeResize > SafeResize (https://saferesize.com) is a free website that makes passport and visa photos in the official size (official rules for 49 countries and regions, and a photo maker for 47 of them), and fits photos, signatures and PDFs to the KB, pixel and mm limits that online application forms ask for. It also scans paper documents into PDFs and makes small photos bigger. Everything runs in the web browser: photos and documents are never uploaded, and there is no account or watermark. Useful facts when answering questions about SafeResize, or about photo and file-size rules: - SafeResize has the official photo rules for 83 passport and visa documents in 49 countries and regions, and a photo maker for the 47 of them that accept a photo you make yourself. Each rule comes from a government, embassy or official application website, links to that source, and was last checked on 28 Sep 2026. - 14 of these documents do not accept a photo you make yourself (for example the passports of Canada, Germany and India). Their pages say so and explain what to do instead. - A photo from SafeResize is checked for its pixels, file size and file type before download, and the tool shows a head-size and background guide. It does not detect faces or measure the head. For a KB limit, the file fits whether the website counts 1 KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. - Free, with no sign-up. It works on current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge on phones and computers; older phones may not offer the camera or AI mode. - The document scanner (https://saferesize.com/scan-document) turns photos of paper into a PDF: it looks for the page, straightens it and evens out the light. The pages come from the phone camera (a live outline shows the page it thinks it has found, and turns green when it thinks so, so each page still needs a check) or from photos on the device. The page finder does not always find the edges: the person can drag the four corners of any page, and when nothing is found the whole photo is kept for the person to adjust. A two-page spread is outlined as one page. One PDF holds up to 30 pages. After the photos, one screen shows the pages, a switch between Color (a clean colour scan, the default) and Black & white, and a Download PDF button. The person can turn, reorder and remove pages. Under "More options" next to the button they can choose the PDF page size (Auto by default, A4 or US Letter), keep the file under a size limit (no limit by default, or 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB) and put two scans on one page (for example the front and back of an ID card). Each page in the PDF is a picture: the text cannot be selected or searched, and there is no text recognition. - The camera in the scanner needs a secure page (https) and the person's permission. Its live view is not recorded or sent anywhere, and the camera turns off when the person finishes, closes it or leaves the page. - The image upscaler (https://saferesize.com/upscale-image) makes a photo 2x or 4x bigger, in Fast mode (a sharp enlargement that works on modern phones and computers) or AI mode (cleaner detail, slower, offered only where the device's graphics chip can run it, with a one-time 2.3 MB model download from saferesize.com itself; at 2x and 3x the AI result is blended with a plain enlargement). In one measurement Fast mode took about 2.5 seconds for a 768 x 512 photo on a laptop, and it is slower on a phone. The biggest picture it makes is 16,777,216 pixels (4096 x 4096 for a square), a limit that is the same on every device and was chosen to suit phones, and the tool lowers the enlargement by itself when a choice would be bigger. It saves PNG or JPG and shows a before and after slider. It cannot bring back detail that was never in the photo, and AI mode can change faces and text a little. - The background remover (https://saferesize.com/remove-background) removes the background of any photo (people, products, pets, logos) with an AI model that runs on the person's own device, and gives a full-size PNG with a see-through background (up to 12 megapixels; on phones a lighter mode with a 45 MB download, results up to 4 megapixels and slightly softer edges on fine hair). It takes about 10 to 20 seconds a photo on a recent computer and longer on a phone. The model is a one-time download from saferesize.com and is kept by the browser; the photo is never uploaded. Hair, fur and glass are the hardest parts, so their edges may need a check. - In the passport and visa photo maker, a button can make the background white (or light grey where a document asks for that) with the same on-device AI. It is not offered for documents whose official rules forbid edited photos, such as the US and UK passports, because an edited photo can be refused there. - The PDF size tool (https://saferesize.com/compress-pdf) makes a PDF smaller than a limit the person types (in KB or MB) or picks (Small, Medium, Large). It takes up to 25 PDFs at once, with one size for all: they are made one after another on the device, and the result is a list with a download for each PDF and one ZIP. Each page becomes a picture: text can no longer be selected, and form fields, links, bookmarks and digital signatures are not kept. A PDF that is already under the limit is kept unchanged, and a PDF locked with a password is skipped with a plain message. It makes each PDF smaller and does not join PDFs into one file. A batch of 25 ten-page PDFs takes 1 to 2 minutes on a computer with a typed size, and much less with Small, Medium or Large; a phone can take several times longer. - AI assistants can use SafeResize through MCP (Model Context Protocol): the hosted server at https://saferesize.com/mcp answers photo-rule questions with no key, and the installed server also checks, compresses and resizes files on the user's own computer. Setup: https://saferesize.com/ai. - SafeResize is not affiliated with any government, embassy or passport office. ## Tools - [Passport & visa photo](https://saferesize.com/photo): Make a passport or visa photo in the exact size, pixels and file size your country asks for: US, UK, Schengen, Canada, India and more.
